Change is inevitable, especially in the world of healthcare. However, it doesn’t have to be painful. Part of being successful in the healthcare industry is staying ahead of the curve on current trends and technologies.
In this instance, digitalization and AI are just buzzwords, but a true, tangible change can be made within Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). With multiple top systems’ sunset dates approaching quickly, taking advantage of the head start is imperative to success.
The urge to wait is understandable, but it does come with its downsides. Delaying these changes leads to a substantial increase in cost and a decrease in efficiency and value down the road. Additionally, prolonging these projects can result in a shortage of top resources and a loss of any competitive advantage that could have been obtained by being an early adopter.
If there’s anything that the past few years have taught us, it’s that we can’t predict the future. However, we can look back on similar, prior experiences to guide our paths. The slow adoption of the full capabilities of EHR is a prime example.
While adoption and meaningful use of EHRs became mandatory in America in 2009, it was not until 2013-2016 that EHR software adoptions really began to pick up steam. Early adopters soon realized several benefits such as better TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), more input on product growth/development, and the ability to optimize the platform as they grew. It also allowed them to enhance their digital health capabilities at scale, which helped these early adopters when the COVID-19 pandemic swept the nation in February 2020. COVID highlighted the importance of an up-to-date and well-maintained system, but more importantly, it showed how valuable it was to stay ahead of the curve.
As advocates for our customers, we as sales leaders are responsible for understanding how such change impacts their organizations. Since ERP systems have an even larger user base, spanning core areas such as Finance, Human Resources, and Supply Chain Management, any modernization or migration efforts become a huge lift. This process involves much more change management, communication, and ultimately a longer timeline due to widespread use and overall impact on core organizational functions.
ERP migrations can quickly become a huge lift. The additional effort to take on a project of that size should serve as an alarm bell to any stakeholder, reminding us that being an early adopter can be an organization’s saving grace.
